Russian drone strike near Ukraine-Moldova border kills at least two
Russian drones struck a border checkpoint near Ukraine-Moldova border, killing two civilians. Moldovan PM says 17 drones hit territory in August. Ukraine targets Russian oil terminal. Details on casualties and attack specifics remain unclear.

Russian drones struck a border checkpoint near the Ukraine-Moldova border, killing at least two civilians and wounding three others, according to Odesa regional governor Oleg Kiper. The attack occurred at the Starokozache international road checkpoint, which was subsequently closed by Ukraine's State Border Guard Service. A Moldovan driver was also injured in the strike, the country's foreign ministry reported.
Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan stated that 17 drones had hit Moldovan territory in August alone, a significant increase from the previous year. 'The attacks have intensified so much,' Tofan said in a video of a cabinet meeting, 'it's becoming the norm, yet at the same time it's clearly an extremely worrying development.' The attack forced the closure of the checkpoint, which is located around 50,000 kilometers south of Kyiv.
Ukraine and Russia continued to exchange air strikes on each other's infrastructure. Ukrainian forces struck targets in Russia's Black Sea port city of Novorossiysk and in the Krasnodar region, including a naval base and an oil terminal, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky. The Russian defence ministry claimed its forces had struck a Ukrainian cargo vessel carrying military equipment in the Black Sea en route to Odesa, as well as a warehouse in Kyiv allegedly belonging to a drone manufacturing company.
Al Jazeera reported that Russian drones also targeted Kyiv overnight, causing fires but no casualties. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported a drone strike on a 16-storey building, with emergency responders heading to the site. Russian air strikes also damaged port, transport and civilian infrastructure in the Mykolaiv region, killing one and injuring several people, according to a local official.
Russian forces shot down 596 Ukrainian drones during the night, the defence ministry said. Ukrainian authorities confirmed attacks in the area, stating that military vessels at a naval base in Novorossiysk were hit, with missile carriers among the vessels 'lost' at the base. Novorossiysk, a frequent target of Ukrainian drone strikes, is a major outlet for Russian oil, oil products and grain exports.
The exact number of casualties and the full extent of damage remain unclear. Further details on the attack and its implications will require additional reporting and verification.
