The Pitt, a medical drama, has received 25 Emmy nominations and is praised by real doctors for its realistic portrayal of emergency medicine. The show highlights global healthcare challenges.

The Pitt, a medical drama series, has been nominated for 25 Emmy Awards, making it the most decorated show of the year. The series, which follows the staff of Pittsburgh's Trauma Medical Centre, has garnered praise from real-life doctors for its realistic depiction of emergency medicine. Dr Tony Cirillo, President of the American College of Emergency Physicians, said the show 'makes us feel validated for everything we go through every day.'
The series, which features 15 episodes each representing an hour of a day, captures the chaos and intensity of an emergency department. It includes graphic depictions of complex procedures and life-saving interventions. The lead character, Dr Michael Robinavitch, played by Noah Wyle, is an executive producer and part of the writing team, which includes qualified doctors. Wyle was invited to a conference with over 6,000 emergency medicine experts, where he received heartfelt thanks from attendees.
Doctors and nurses in the UK and US have praised the show for its relatability and accuracy. Dr Fiona Hunter, vice president of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine in Scotland, said the series is 'watchable, relatable' during downtime. Dr Rob Perry, a consultant in North Wales, noted that the show reassures viewers that doctors and nurses are 'doing their level best to give the best care they can.'
The series also highlights broader healthcare issues, such as long waits, patient frustration, and health inequalities. Prof Damian Roland, a practising emergency medicine consultant, said the show illustrates common problems in emergency departments worldwide. Sarah Tosh, a senior NHS nurse and series medical adviser, praised the show for its focus on medical procedures and patient care.
One of the stars, Gerran Howell, who was born and raised in South Wales, underwent a medical boot camp to learn techniques and jargon. He said the experience gave him a newfound respect for the medical profession but confirmed he would stick to acting. Howell is nominated for an outstanding supporting actor award at the Emmys.
The winners of the Emmy Awards will be announced on 14 September in Los Angeles. The Pitt is available to stream on HBO Max in the UK and US.
