Tamil Nadu CM's London event cancelled over safety concerns
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay's London event was called off due to safety concerns raised by police. The cancellation left fans disappointed. The trip also saw investment deals worth over ₹12,300 crore. Opposition questioned the trip's purpose.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay's event in London was called off after the Metropolitan Police raised safety concerns. The cancellation left fans, some of whom had queued for hours, disappointed. The IT wing of Vijay’s TVK confirmed the cancellation, stating that the meeting could not proceed due to safety concerns and a request from the London Metropolitan Police.
Vijay, who is currently on a UK visit, witnessed the signing of several MoUs in London on Monday for investments reportedly worth over ₹12,300 crore. The investment push aims to make Tamil Nadu a leading hub for advanced manufacturing and technology in Asia. It is expected to create more than 9,400 high-value jobs across the state. The biggest investment commitment came from auto component company Samvardhana Motherson International Limited, which signed an MoU with Guidance Tamil Nadu to invest around ₹11,000 crore over the next five years.
Opposition leaders questioned the purpose of the trip, saying he only went to attend actor-racer Ajith Kumar’s Le Mans Cup race at Silverstone. AIADMK general secretary and former chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami questioned the absence of details about investments during Vijay’s visit. He noted that no photographs had surfaced showing him participating in a meeting meant for attracting investments, instead highlighting images of a specific event he attended.
Vijay, who left for London on September 10 on a week-long visit to attract investments to Tamil Nadu, is accompanied by cabinet colleague Aadhav Arjuna and government officials. He is expected to return on September 17. The Tamil Nadu government has assured a leading European auto spare parts manufacturer of all necessary support and cooperation to facilitate its proposed ₹3,000 crore investment in India.
The event cancellation highlights the challenges of organizing large gatherings in foreign cities, where local authorities may impose restrictions for public safety. While the exact nature of the safety concerns remains unspecified, the police's intervention underscores the prioritization of public safety over political engagement. The Tamil Nadu government has not provided further details on the incident, and no response from the London Metropolitan Police has been made available.
What remains unknown is the specific nature of the safety concerns that led to the event's cancellation. Additionally, the extent to which the trip's focus on investment deals was aligned with Vijay's stated objectives is unclear. The opposition's criticism suggests a potential disconnect between the government's public messaging and the actual activities during the visit. Further clarification from the Tamil Nadu government and the London Metropolitan Police would be necessary to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the event's cancellation.
