What happens next
The Congress will focus on consolidating its base and addressing internal divisions ahead of the 2027 Punjab assembly elections.
The Indian National Congress has appointed Pargat Singh, a former Olympic hockey player and Jalandhar Cantonment MLA, as the new president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC). The move follows the resignation of Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, who stepped down after months of factional disputes within the state unit. The decision comes as the party seeks to unify its ranks ahead of the 2027 Punjab assembly elections.
Warring’s resignation followed a prolonged leadership battle between his faction and that of Charanjit Singh Channi, the former Chief Minister of Punjab. Sources indicate that feedback received by Sachin Pilot, the AICC’s Punjab in-charge, suggested Warring would struggle to inspire confidence among party leaders. Pilot reportedly conveyed this to party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, who ultimately approved the change. The high command opted for a Sikh leader with national recognition but not a CM contender, leading to the selection of Pargat Singh.
Pargat Singh, 62, is a former India hockey captain who represented the nation at the 1988, 1992, and 1996 Olympics, captaining the team in the last two. He also served as India’s flag-bearer at the 1996 Atlanta Games. His sporting career includes a bronze medal at the 1986 Asian Games and a silver at the 1990 Asian Games. He received the Arjuna Award in 1989 and the Padma Shri in 1998. After retiring, he coached the national team and held administrative roles in Punjab hockey.
Politically, Singh began his career with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in 2012, winning Jalandhar Cantonment. He left the SAD in 2016 and joined the Congress in 2017. Under Charanjit Singh Channi’s leadership, he served as a Cabinet minister from 2021 to 2022, overseeing education, sports, and youth affairs. In the 2022 elections, he retained his seat, defeating a fellow former hockey player by over 5,000 votes.
Warring, who had been the PPCC president since 2021, blamed Sachin Pilot for his exit, claiming the AICC had decided to remove him. He had previously faced pressure from the Channi camp and was seen as a holdover due to support from Bhupesh Baghel, his predecessor as AICC state in-charge. However, after Baghel was replaced, Warring’s position became untenable. The high command, wary of promoting Channi or Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa—both CM aspirants—chose Singh as a compromise.
The next key development is the 2027 Punjab assembly elections, where the Congress aims to regain power. The party’s leadership will now focus on consolidating its base and addressing internal divisions. The appointment of Pargat Singh is seen as an effort to balance regional and national appeal while avoiding the pitfalls of past factional conflicts.
