Bengaluru Experiences Overnight Rain, KIA Records 94.2 mm
Bengaluru saw overnight rainfall with KIA recording 94.2 mm, bringing temperatures down. IMD forecasts continued rain and yellow alerts.

Residents of Bengaluru, who had endured hot and humid weather for the past two weeks, woke up to a rainy Sunday morning. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city received widespread overnight rainfall, with the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) weather station recording 94.2 mm of rain over a 24-hour period ending at 8:30 a.m. on September 20, 2026. The HAL Airport station recorded 66 mm, while Bengaluru city itself saw 15.9 mm of rainfall.
The rainfall brought temperatures down by a few degrees Celsius, with the maximum temperature in Bengaluru city station dropping to 28.3°C on Sunday, compared to 31.2°C the previous day. The heavy downpour at KIA caused one international flight to be diverted to Chennai and one domestic flight to be delayed by 30 minutes. Airport officials stated that the rest of the operations continued as usual.
IMD noted that a low-pressure area over the North Andaman Sea and adjoining areas has moved west-northwestwards and is located over the North Andaman Sea and adjoining East-Central Bay of Bengal. The associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 5.8 km above mean sea level. The system is expected to move west-northwestwards and gradually intensify, becoming a depression over the East-Central Bay of Bengal on September 21 and a deep depression over the West-Central Bay of Bengal on September 22. It is likely to reach the West-Central and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal, close to the South Odisha–North Andhra Pradesh coast, by the morning of September 23.
IMD officials stated that under the influence of this weather system, widespread rainfall is expected across all districts of Karnataka until September 24. A yellow alert has been declared for all districts in south interior, north interior, and coastal Karnataka, including Bidar, Kalburgi, Yadgir, Vijayapur, Belagavi, Dharwad, Haveri, Gadag, Shivamogga, Chikkamangaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, Bengaluru, Kolar, Chikkaballpur, and Bengaluru South, which will receive heavy rainfall.
The forecast for Bengaluru for the next 24 hours indicates generally cloudy skies with light to moderate rain/thundershowers and gusty winds at speeds of 30-40 Kmph. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be around 32°C and 20°C, respectively.
What remains unknown is the long-term impact of the rainfall on Bengaluru's infrastructure and whether the yellow alert will lead to any additional measures or responses from local authorities. The IMD's forecast suggests continued rain and potential for further weather changes, but the exact implications for the city's residents and services are yet to be fully assessed.
