Audi has launched its most affordable and energy-efficient electric vehicle yet, the A2 E-tron. The compact crossover starts at £32,200, which is approximately $45,000. It features an ultra-low drag coefficient of 0.24, a first for the brand, and offers a range of up to 401 miles on the European WLTP cycle. The vehicle is currently available only in Europe, with no immediate plans for a North American release.

The A2 E-tron's design includes flush door handles, cool air intakes, a fully enclosed underbody, and gap reducers around the wheel arches, all contributing to its aerodynamic efficiency. It also introduces bidirectional charging, allowing the vehicle to support vehicle-to-load or vehicle-to-home via a trunk-mounted outlet or a compatible DC wall box. This feature is a first for Audi and highlights the car's advanced capabilities.

Inside, the A2 E-tron features a standard curved MMI panoramic display that combines an 11.9-inch digital gauge cluster with a 12.8-inch center touch screen. The cabin also includes a Fidlock magnetic fastening system, enabling owners to attach items like cupholders and charging cable bags to designated points around the cabin and trunk. This technology, previously seen on bicycles, is now making its debut in a production car.

Audi has shifted its strategy from an all-electric future to a mix of gas, hybrid, and electrification. While the A2 E-tron may not be available alongside other models like the S6 Sportback E-tron at dealerships, the company has not ruled out future expansion. The A2 E-tron represents a significant step in Audi's approach to electric vehicles, balancing affordability with efficiency.

The A2 E-tron's energy consumption is impressively low, with the right motor and battery setup consuming just 12.8 kWh per 62 miles (100 km). This efficiency, combined with its range capabilities, positions the A2 E-tron as a strong contender in the compact EV market. Audi's decision to focus on affordability and efficiency in this model reflects a broader industry trend where consumers are increasingly seeking vehicles that offer both value and performance.
